Bean Boots are as ubiquitous and “New England prep essential” as you can get on the East Coast. Prior to moving to Cambridge (I’m from Southern California), I had never even heard about L.L. Bean. However, it was clear immediately after a few weeks observing the style and persona of New England (plus the atmosphere of the Harvard undergraduate campus and community) that Bean Boots were “the boot” to get. They’re functional of course, and because they are made of durable, long-lasting material, they are functionally desirable. However, the added desirability comes from the fact that Bean Boots are affiliated with L.L. Bean–the ultimate authority on outdoor living and exploration. People want authentic products designed to empower them to “climb a mountain” but still gives them the choice to opt out of climbing the mountain. They serve to cater to dual desires.
