For the record, I don’t believe in functional fashion. I don’t think heels that change height, or pants that turn into shorts will ever become a fashion trend, because the fashion world is excess and begs us to consume more. I’ve seen transforming dresses before, but none of them had as strong of a design as Hussein Chalayan’s 2007 spring/summer collection. To get the full impact of these designs, it’s helpful to see them in motion. The dresses were as elegant as they were functional. Their ability to morph into another dress felt like an integral part of their design, not an attention-seeking gimmick. It’s a remarkable accomplishment.
