What I’ve Got: Self Expiring Medication Packaging

Self Expiring produces medication packaging that changes appearance when the product is no longer fit for human consumption. The product was developed based on several fieldwork groups in India; the groups discovered that individuals either lacked the knowledge that medication expired or lacked the ability to read the warnings on the package to know if the product was expired. The time-dependent change of this package shows attention to this detail by using internationally accepted poison symbols rather than just text. The system is organic because it requires no change in behavior on the part of the consumer. The system is human because it recognizes that people are less likely to take medication with a poison symbol on it, even if they cannot read the package itself. For these reasons, this is a desirable innovation.
