The Rothko is a wearable cuff watch that alludes to a modernist intersection of pure shapes and 3 dimensional forms. We were drawn to the prominent square shaped form of the watch face, and wanted to create a framing device via the watch band that abstracts the part as a piece of wearable jewelry.
The name of the watch is in reference to the abstract artist Mark Rothko who used simple abstract fields and suspended rectangles to create his compositions. As a challenge on the “Psychology of Status,” we wanted the watch to evoke a sense of high art, often seen as the epitome of status.
