The incandescent light bulb was invented in 1879 by Thomas Edison. The incandescent light bulb had a carbon filament that needed to be heated to very high temperature in order to produce light. The light bulb, naturally, required a lot of energy to sustain its brightness due to the high resistance of the carbon filament. It also produced quite a bit of heat as a result of the high resistance filament. In general, it wasn’t energy efficient. Fast forward to 2012 where the electronics company Philips developed a Wi-Fi enabled LED bulb that can display more than sixteen million different colors. The lightbulbs can be placed in a room and connected to a smartphone to display specific colors that the user wants. Not only are these light bulbs extremely customizable in terms of color, they are also extraordinarily energy efficient and will likely last for a decade or more all thanks to the genius of the light-emitting diode. It is noteworthy that these lights can also change color and brightness when connected with music or a movie.
