Wingsuit flying is a new phenomenon that involves
individuals jumping out of airplanes in wingsuits (“dressed like an amped up
flying squirrel”). Before jumping out of a plane in a wingsuit you have to
complete 200 skydives. In tournaments, competitors are measured on speed,
distance covered, and time in the air. The equipment itself is very expensive,
with the suit running at around $2,000 with the helmet, GoPro cameras and GPS
modules running another $2,000 plus. Wingsuit flying is an incredibly new form
of adventure sport, and at the same time is incredibly scientific, with each
jump testing the velocity that humans can fly at. Recent championships have
seen divers flying at greater than 200mph, way faster than the terminal
velocity.
