Fountain pens can be a pricey luxury. The best brands release beautiful themed limited edition pens that can go for several hundred, or several thousand, dollars. And they sell out. Why would you spend the cost of a low (or high) end laptop on a pen? Given how often I loose my Bics, it seems like a terrible thing to want, but I find these highly desirable. These pens are well crafted and flow beautifully when writing. I suspect there is also something about the act of writing that inspires a certain kind of fantasy in people- think of how many people you know who are obsessed with moleskins/stationary/pens.
